The Digital Product Owner (Payments) role resides within the Handelsbanken Payments area and operates as part of a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional agile delivery team in the Bank’s flagship transformation programme. The team are responsible for researching, designing, procuring, and implementing transformative payments technology to modernise the Bank’s legacy IT systems, deliver an enhanced user experience and create new income growth potential. They are responsible for engaging collaboratively with relevant business functions (including Payment Operations, Fraud, Branch, etc.) in order to ensure all interests are represented in the development of the Bank’s future state payments platform and to support the adoption and embedding of new payments products and processes. 

Reporting into the Payments Transformation Lead, the role holder will be responsible for developing a product roadmap and establishing, refining and delivering against an associated product backlog in a performant, secure and user focussed way. In doing so, they will ensure alignment to wider Bank strategy and ensure that maximum business value is achieved. The Digital Product Owner is also responsible for the ongoing governance, risk management and regulatory compliance activities relating to the digital product(s) under their ownership, forging strong, effective relationships with the 1st and 2nd line control functions. 


Main Responsibilities 

  • Support the successful procurement and implementation of a replacement Payments platform through the definition of robust business requirements and by acting as the voice of the business throughout key discovery, design and delivery phases.
  • Engage with key stakeholders to agree where Payments capabilities can be adopted ‘out of the box’ vs where existing processes need to remain in place, to achieve an optimal user experience and commercial outcome.
  • Understand and influence the sequencing of a new Payments platform implementation to mitigate any significant business impact.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders from across the business including Payment Operations, the Branch, Fraud etc., and the control functions to understand business needs and priorities, supporting effective inclusion in your product roadmap.
  • Develop a digital product roadmap, ensuring alignment to the wider Payments digital product vision and establish an associated backlog, taking accountability for successful delivery against this with a clear user focussed, service design approach.
  • Oversee a pro-active, customer focussed, multi-disciplinary team, working with skilled specialists across insights, UX design, technology delivery, third party suppliers, security and infrastructure, in order to develop highly effective digital products through a process of research, ideation and design.
  • Define and measure the success criteria for your digital product(s), creating a clear set of OKRs that support the Bank’s Transformation goals and wider strategic objectives. 
  • Establish clear feedback loops to understand the impact of your product and feed changes and improvements in to your backlog, continually reviewing, refining and prioritising the backlog to create optimal value in line with the overarching product roadmap vision and OKRs.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the seamless delivery of digital products to end users, including appropriate training, communications and literature to facilitate adoption. 
  • Develop strong working relationships with the governance and control functions, demonstrating effective governance, control and risk management throughout the digital product development lifecycle. 
  • Foster a customer-centric ethos and promote a mindset of continuous learning and improvement within the delivery team.
  • Work closely with stakeholders in Group (Sweden), where required, to accelerate digital development and ensure optimal ways of working.
  • Work collaboratively with other Digital Product Owners to ensure alignment and to manage any associated dependencies effectively.
  • Serve as a digital product SME, influencing, inspiring and educating others at all levels across the Bank.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, innovation and competitor propositions.

  • Payments expertise is essential – domestic UK schemes (FPS, Bacs, CHAPS) and International (CBPR+, SEPA). Experience of Direct and Indirect membership of Payment schemes is desirable.
  • A good understanding of end-to-end Payment workflows, including validation applied and any supporting exception handling.
  • Customer-centric with a strong focus on end user experience and outcomes.
  • Experience of a digital product delivery environment with exposure to, or knowledge of, agile development and change methodologies.
  • Highly positive and collaborative team player, who actively engages stakeholders, supports team members, and shares knowledge with others.
  • Experience implementing and/or managing Payments platforms is highly desirable but not essential
  • Strong influencing skills with the ability to confidently represent the Payments Product area and gain buy-in to the strategy and roadmap with a diverse set of stakeholders.
