Main Responsibilities 

Handelsbanken has multiple business areas that comprise of numerous in-house and 3rd party systems and needs a Vertical Technology Lead to take technical ownership of one of the areas. The role will be responsible for building up and then leading a modern software capability in the UK that can deliver at pace. 
 
The successful individual will lead multiple technical teams, take technical ownership of the applications, provide technical strategic direction for both new and pre-existing services, improve the ways of working with Group teams, and support as we move those digital offerings onto the Cloud. The successful individual will need to collaborate with key stakeholders in all areas of the business to achieve this. In addition, the bank is looking to move to a modern agile mindset and way of operating, so the right individual will also be able to influence and shape that transition.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Engineering leadership
  • Expertise in full software development life cycle. The ideal candidate should also have extensive experience in Java with knowledge of front-end and back-end development.
  • Own the quality of application design, selecting the right technologies to create highly performant, stable, large scale, micro services based, cloud based applications.
  • Participate in code reviews with the team, pair programming exercises where appropriate guiding best practice in modern software engineering.
Cloud experience  
  • Support the move to performant, micro-service or serverless based Cloud applications.
  • Advise on correct cloud native strategy to build towards the bank’s target architecture.
Agile software development lifecycle
  • Demonstrable experience delivering software using agile methodologies – ideally scrum or Kanban to deliver lean MVP solutions.
  • Support a move to DevOps culture, ensure best practices are put in place and followed.
  • Enable teams to be accountable for their own automation testing strategy, making sure testing happens fast, frequently and effectively.
Technical ownership and quality of solutions
  • Ensure that we safely and securely incorporate third party solutions and / or Group solutions into our Digital offerings.
  • Ensure that services bought and configured have suitable level of technical quality (e.g. maintainability, performance, etc.).
Delivery aspects
  • Own technical aspects of delivery for our digital customer touchpoints.
  • Enhance the existing agile ways of working. Optimise the delivery throughput for web front end and back end components.
  • Through continuous improvement, drive technical operational excellence across the organisation.
  • Be able to marry Agile and Waterfall where necessary.
People leadership
  • Line manage, coach and mentor developers and product configuration staff.  Put in place the technical team structure to achieve the outcomes for your area of responsibility.

Ideal Candidate

  • 7+ years of experience of product engineering and delivery, of which at least 2 years should be in a people management role
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working in Java and cloud native app product development, database, build pipeline and networking technologies
  • Demonstrable experience of Agile and of leading and scaling distributed autonomous engineering teams across remote locations
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and to pick up new skill sets quickly
  • Track record of delivering well engineered solutions using current technologies
  • Experience running engineering teams over a sustained period and can demonstrate excellent leadership across technology domains like development, quality, support, architecture and integration
  • Experienced in product development life cycles and working in a lean-agile way.
