Senior DevOps Engineer

Job Introduction

You will be joining the expanding UK Technology (UKT) team and will have a pivotal role in automating and streamlining the software delivery and infrastructure management processes that will underpin the successful delivery of an ambitious IT modernisation programme.
As a senior member of the team, you will build relationships with other teams across UKT including the software development and IT operations teams providing expertise and leadership to support development of continuous integration, continuous deployment, and infrastructure-as-code practices enabling the timely delivery of high quality software products.

The UK Bank is undertaking a significant technology modernisation programme, in this role you will make an invaluable contribution to this by providing tools, processes and expertise to support the delivery of new software products..
The ideal candidate will be an evangelist of DevOps practice who will bring a best of breed approach to support the IT modernisation programme. You will spend significant time partnering with technology teams and senior managers with the potential to promote a culture of shared responsibility for system reliability and performance

Main Responsibilities 

  • Evangelise DevOps practice across the Technology organisation at the Bank, supporting teams in their adoption and maturing of their approach to implementing change.
  • Provide support to and mentor junior members of the teams.
  • Balance priorities between existing on-premise applications and tooling and driving our Cloud adoption forwards.
  • Implement and manage Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to automate software build, test, and deployment processes to support rapid and reliable releases.
  • Design and implement observability capabilities including robust monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions enabling the tracking of system performance, detection of issues, and proactive troubleshooting.
  • Influence platform / system teams who are using tools like Bicep and Ansible to automate the provisioning and configuration of infrastructure components, providing expertise and communicating requirements that will ensure consistency and reliability across environments.
  • Contribute to the work towards containerization platforms like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes as well as cloud native services to manage and scale applications efficiently.
  • Manage version control systems (e.g. Git) and ensure best practices are followed for code branching, merging, and repository management. 
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, identifying bottlenecks and collaborating with developers to resolve issues.
  • Coordinate and manage software releases, post-release monitoring, and documentation updates.
  • Ensure appropriate backup, disaster recovery, and failover strategies are in place to ensure business continuity and high availability of applications and services.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of infrastructure configurations, processes, and troubleshooting guides.

  • Recent strong experience in DevOps practices, including developing CI/CD pipelines, automation, and infrastructure-as-code, preferably in the banking or financial services sector.
  • Proficient in the use of scripting and programming languages (e.g., Bash, Python, Ruby, PowerShell) for automation.
  • Significant exposure to CI/CD pipeline tooling (eg. TeamCity, Azure DevOps, Jenkins etc)
  • Knowledge of configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Strong experience of configuring and managing operating systems, particularly Linux, and release and support of applications, particularly Java microservices.
  • Experience working with containerisation and orchestration technologies (e.g. Docker and Kubernetes) 
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience using cloud platforms and services (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Experience in the use management of version control systems (e.g. Git) and collaboration tools.
  • Good understanding of networking concepts and security practices in cloud environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related field (or equivalent) is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to analyse, articulate and present complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to build strong professional relationships at all levels of the organisation and represent Handelsbanken plc effectively.
