UK Credit has functional responsibility for credit operations in the UK, ensuring that the Bank’s credit policy, process and culture is fully implemented in the branch network. 

The Local Credit Team had functional responsibility and accountability for granting credit in their area of responsibility and ensuring the Bank complies with Handelsbanken's credit policy.  

The key stakeholders for the Local Credit team are UK Credit, the UK Board, Board & Risk Committee, Districts, Branches, Chief Branch Officer, external and internal auditors, UK Credit Risk, Products and Compliance. 

The Local Property Valuer role is responsible for providing oversight on property valuations for secured lending purposes, especially in the more complex cases including specialist sectors and mixed portfolios for cases at branch and operational credit team approval level, including high risk property lending cases. 

The Local Property Valuer role is based in either London or Manchester, but flexible working arrangements can be discussed based on individual circumstances.

Main Responsibilities 

  • Be the primary contact within the local credit team with regards to property valuations for secured lending purposes, assisting especially in the more complex cases including specialist sectors and mixed portfolios
  • Work closely with the local and UK credit teams as well as with other UK functions in all matters related to property valuations
  • Help to develop and deliver property related local training to credit experts and branches.
  • Keep abreast of any changes to credit policy, collateral management policy and procedures, wider market or economic events and developments in the area of valuation that might impact our portfolio
  • Provide subject matter expertise, monitoring and analysis in relation to the implementation of regulatory and policy related instructions
  • Work with colleagues across UK Credit and other UK Departments to develop and enhance credit management information (MI) and training to increase visibility of actual and potential credit risks within the UK credit portfolio
  • Provide SME training and support to the operational credit team and allocated branches on property valuation procedures and documentation; using the agreed and aligned training material produced
  • Use local / regional / sector property market analysis produced by UK Property Valuer to support knowledge sharing and training to branches regarding property trends, risks and insights
  • Escalate emerging risks and identify trends within local geographic areas of responsibility, 
  • Ensure that property valuation instructions (including monitoring & reviews) are well embedded in the allocated branches, managing property valuation risks by monitoring (PRVM), controlling, and reporting effectively
  • Engaging with external valuer firms to ensure that they meet the Bank’s requirements, assessing their suitability, their remit in relation to the Bank’s terms and conditions of engagement
  • Undertake regulatory reviews relating to RMC’s and that they are performed timely, well documented and in line with internal procedures
  • Provide oversight on property valuations for secured lending purposes, especially in the more complex cases including specialist sectors and mixed portfolios for UK(M)CC and above cases, including high risk property lending cases
  • Ensure the data quality relating to property valuation information held on all systems to support integrity of reporting is of sufficient quality and documented in line with internal procedures
  • Ensure sufficient control, via close dialogue with the operational credit team and strong follow up routines, in order to give relevant input to the regular branch reviews
  • Oversight of operational implementation of instructions, including escalation to the Local Heads of Credit as necessary
  • Ensure that data quality is sufficient relating to property valuation information held on all systems to support integrity of reporting
  • Operate in line with the Bank's Risk Management framework (including sub-frameworks) and relevant risk and compliance policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate and timely escalation of any concerns to their line manager

  • Understand and has previous experience of the UK property market
  • High degree of integrity
  • Chartered Surveyor (RICS) with suitable academic qualifications and practical experience in most areas of surveying, but with particular knowledge of valuation work, preferably coupled with a passionate interest in the property market
  • Ideally, the individual should have a diverse geographical knowledge across the UK with experience in the residential and commercial property sectors
  • A proactive and pragmatic working style and ability to work independently without supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills in both written and spoken English
  • An analytical mind set with attention to detail and a methodical approach, together with a reasonable working knowledge of Word, Excel, and reasonable computer skills generally
